One killed, 25 injured on third day of blockade

One political activist was killrf and 25 others were injured in sporadic clashes, damage of vehicles and disruption of train services marked third day of the third spell of non-stop siege programme called by Awami League-led 14-party alliance demanding removal of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) yesterday.

A Jubo Dal leader Mohon, 26,was killed during a rally of the BNP-led 4-Party alliance at Satmatha Zero Point in Bogra.
Thousands of activists of Awami League- led 14-party alliance gathered on the streets of the besieged capital chanting slogans demanding removal of Chief Election Commissioner.

Leaders and activists of the 14-party alliance streamed into Bangabandhu Avenue, Saidabad, Karwan Bazar, Russell Square, Mirpur-1, 10, Uttara, Mohakhali and Jatrabari to hold rallies and processions.

“Sarbadaliya Chhatra Oikya” of 4-party alliance organised a big rally at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque protesting the blockade and demanding announcement of the election schedule immediately.
Although there was tension following the gathering of 14-party and 4-party supporters in central Dhaka, the riot police and BDR personnel tackled the situation strongly by keeping the rival parties apart.
At least 13 activists of Jatiya Party (Ershad) were injured when BNP activists attacked their rally at Purana Paltan at about 1:30pm.

JP presidium member Kazi Zafar Ahmed blamed the attack on activists of the BNP and its main ally Jamaat-e-Islami.
He also alleged that RAB and police present on the scene did not intervene and demanded a judicial inquiry into this incident.
Most of the shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed. A good number of transports like BRTC buses, human haulers, CNG auto rickshaws and minibuses plied on the city roads.

Law enforcers patrolled the strategic points of the city to maintain law and order.
Road communication between the capital and the other parts of the country remained snapped as no long-route bus plied.

After a four-day break, the blockade programme started on Monday as 14-party leaders alleged that President and Chief Adviser Prof Iajuddin Ahmed has failed to implement their 11-point demand for holding free and fair election.

At least 10 Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal activists were injured in an attack allegedly by Awami League activists near the Eid Ghah in Natore when they were going to join a BNP rally.

Local sources said Awami League activists attacked the processions of
Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal at about 4:30 pm leaving 10 of them injured.
